Grab those pom poms and get ready to fly – eager cheerleading students throughout the Hills can now enrol in All Star and Dance Pom classes at the biggest callisthenics and cheerleading club in the area – the Acacia Callisthenics and Cheer Club.
Running for over 30 years, the Adelaide Hills based Callisthenics and All Star Cheerleading Club is the fastest growing club in the area.
Bringing together students from all across the Hills including Mount Barker, Littlehampton, Nairne, Woodside, Lobethal, Oakbank and Crafers, the club has something for everyone.
Whether you are two or 92, boy or girl the club caters for all students skill levels with a number of tiny tots, junior, sub-junior, intermediate and senior classes on offer.
Principal Coach Renee Mayo is excited to introduce the cheerleading class and said it is a lot of fun for everyone.
“I have been involved in callisthenics for 23 years and love it but I thought the students needed something extra, something fun and a bit new,” she said.
“So far we have around 30 students enrolled and we have only been advertising for a couple of weeks so I think it will be pretty popular.
“Anyone can enrol – it doesn't matter it you have no experience.
“Students will get a couple of free classes to begin with to see if they like it so they don't have to be locked in straight away.”
Over the past twelve months Renee has been perfecting her cheerleading skills and undertaking training with the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation to become an accredited teacher.
She is now fully qualified and ready to put her skills to good use.
“With classes running for one hour – parents can duck out and do their shopping and come back before it ends,” Renee said.
“Plus students don't get too worn out but still learn a lot in the lesson.
“It's a great way to keep fit and have some fun at the same time.”
During cheerleading classes students learn traditional All Star Dance and Pom routines as well as tumbling and dance technique.
It also helps to develop strength, flexibility, musicality and co-ordination.
As a community run club it runs solely on the help of volunteers.
Volunteer and parent of a student at the club Katie Goedeke has been volunteering at the club for one year and is currently teaching beginner callisthenics classes to younger students.
With a background in ballet Katie is new to callisthenics and is thoroughly enjoying studying the sport and teaching the little ones basic ballet techniques.
“They really needed some new volunteers at the club and as my daughter is a student there I thought why not?” she said.
“It is a great club with a real community feel that others just don't have.
“I will definitely keep volunteering there for a while.”
Katie's 11 year old daughter has been a member of the club for two years and is absolutely loving her time there.
“She has made so many great friends at the club – she has been to other clubs in the area but this one is definitely the best,” Katie said.
“This year she started at a new school and is lucky enough to have one of her friends from the club there with her.
“All the girls really stick together – it is great to see.”
Next year students will have the chance to compete against other clubs in All Star Cheerleading competitions across the country.
This will give hard-working students the chance to test their skills against teams of a similar level and age.
It is an exciting time for everyone with teams judged not only on technique but creative presentation and overall entertainment.
