Shout A Pillar
June 13th, 2019
As brews are shared in warm fire-lit pubs across the Hills this winter, you may find that the regular beer jug stands to lose its chill over an extended meal or get together.
Not so at The Haus in Hahndorf, where pillars have taken over from jugs as the cutting edge in beer-sharing tech.
“They’re certainly popular with groups of any size,” bar manager Chris Sheehan said.
“People often come up here on a day trip, so it’s good they have a bigger and better version of a jug to last while they’re sharing a pizza or something else.”
Chris explained the simple yet highly effective innovation that separates the pillar from the common jug.
“The whole thing is like a big test tube within a test tube with a release valve at the bottom.
“The inner tube is filled with ice, keeping the beer in the outer tube cold all the way down to the end.”
After all, while it is important to keep things warm indoors in the Hills over winter, beer is not one of them.
“We have many pillar sizes going up to 2.5 litres, so there’s plenty of ways to enjoy it,” Chris said.
The pillars at The Haus have proven popular paired with beers from Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan in Bavaria, purportedly the ‘oldest brewery in the world.’
“This being Hahndorf, there is that obvious German connection and it’s nice to keep that going with the drinks we offer,” Chris said.
“The cloudy and fruity hefe weissbeir is very popular in winter, as is the hearty hefe dunkel, which matches well with our Bavarian platters and our sausage and porkchop sauerkraut.
