Littlehampton’s MisFit Training is back in the ring and serving up hits left, right and centre.

You may have heard of MisFit before – following a three-year break, owner Mis O’Keefe has pulled on the gloves again, offering casual classes for the community.

With a passion for boxing, a background as a personal trainer and a passion for boxing, Mis said she restarted the group classes after plenty of renewed interest.

“People said they’ve enjoyed it, and I love inspiring people to get fit and healthy,” she said.

The emphasis at MisFit Training is to have fun while working out.

“I find the group session atmosphere amazing – there is laughter, music and lots of people,” Mis said.

“Often, people can find exercising hard and I wanted to make it fun for everyone.”

MisFit is unique in offering group classes which are a contrast to the more usual personal training sessions.

“Those coming along are looking for a good environment to be in, so I focus on being upbeat – you don’t have to be serious to get fit,” Mis said.

Nairne mother and Misfit participant Rachel Charles agrees.

“The main thing is that it’s an inclusive, non-threatening environment compared to the standard set up – I’ve tried other gyms, but I’ve usually found them to be a bit too competitive,” she said.

“I’ve just really loved the way the class is set up – it’s casual and relaxed with the ability to go at your own pace, but Mis still pushes you.”

Boxing is a huge passion of Rachel’s and she previously trained with Mis.

When she heard the classes were back, she simply “had to get on board”.

It’s a similar sentiment across participants – Littlehampton resident Lauren Fowles and her friend had previously been attending the sessions since they started in 2014 and Mis’ passion is why they decided to return.

“It’s so easy for anyone new or who hasn’t boxed before to keep coming back,” she said.

“Each of her classes is different – it’s not just boxing, but cardio and core work as well,” she said.

“When you leaving sweating in the middle of winter, it’s a good sign.”

The classes are casual and held two mornings a week, which provides flexibility for participants.

“Being a mum, the casual week-to-week basis is good – if the family was sick then my gym membership was just sponsoring the organisation, but here if I can’t attend, there’s no fee,” Rachel said.

However, the benefits extend beyond physical fitness.

“I’ve been going for a month now and have noticed improved strength and tone but, also, my mind is stronger, I feel more positive and it sets me day up well,” she said.

“Moving your body for function, rather than focussing on appearance and losing weight – you’re empowered.”

Mis encourages everyone to come along.

“Get out of your shell and have a laugh while getting fit,” she said.

MisFit Training boxing classes are held Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6-6.45am.
